Altec Lansing's ACS54 Early Impressions

Published: July 26, 1999 -  Mikael Hagén

Update: The full review is now available

The ACS54 is a 4.1 speaker system just like Creative's FPS1000 and FPS2000. The specs on these are 5 RMS for each satellite with a frequency response of 250hz-18KHz and 20 RMS for the subwoofer with a frequency response of 35-250Hz.  The speakers has only a master and surround knob, where the latter is used to determine how loud the rear speakers should be. I found it more limited than a front rear fader. One other control these speaker lacks are a subwoofer control.

The specs are comparable to the Desktop Theater 5.1 (in 4.1 mode) and clearly behind the FPS2000 but listening to them I found the speakers to be clearly more powerful than the Desktop Theater 5.1 and offering much better sound quality. I only listened to the FPS2000 a few minutes so can't say for sure how these compares with the FPS2000 but I don't think there is a significant difference between them something AGN also agrees with and they have tested both systems. According to the Shopper you can get the ACS54 for only $70 so it looks like a great value.
