/PRNewswire/ -- Starz Encore Group became the first pay TV programmer to offer standard
definition digital cable subscribers movie programming in the Dolby Digital 5.1 audio
format. Unveiled today at the National Association of Broadcasters NAB2000 conference,
Starz Encore has made the service available to all cable operators with set-top boxes
manufactured by Motorola / General Instrument, Scientific-Atlanta, and Pioneer. Starz Encore's showing of the 1999 hit ``The Mummy'' will kick off the Dolby Digital audio transmission with its 10:20AM showing on Wednesday, April 12, 2000 on the STARZ! East feed. DIRECTV currently offers and DISH Network will soon offer Dolby Digital sound for their STARZ! DBS customers. STARZ! will transmit the Dolby Digital signals with approximately 50 initial showings per month (see below for Spring 2000 schedule) featuring such upcoming hit films as ``Blade,'' ``Shakespeare in Love'' (premiering May 6, 2000), ``Austin Powers: The Spy Who Shagged Me'' (premiering May 20, 2000), and ``Inspector Gadget'' (premiering June 3, 2000). Offering Dolby Digital for cable customers of STARZ! is the latest digital service breakthrough to be offered by Starz Encore, which pioneered the now popular multiplexing of flagship premium channels to better serve the increased channel capacity of direct broadcast satellite and digital cable systems. Dolby Digital 5.1 channel surround, also known simply as Dolby Digital, offers sensational sound by delivering five discrete, full-fidelity (3Hz-20,000Hz) audio channels (Left-Center-Right-Left Surround-Right Surround) plus a sub-woofer channel. Viewers with Dolby Digital audio receivers can re-create the same spectacular audio environment when viewing STARZ! at home that they enjoy at movie theatres. ``Our cable customers will now have access to the audio brilliance of Dolby Digital,'' said Marty Sabraw, vice president, technology of Starz Encore. ``This offering underscores Starz Group's position as the digital programming leader in cable and DBS. As further evidenced by our breakthrough subscription video-on demand (S-VOD) service, Starz Encore is enabling greater customer satisfaction and convenience within the premium movie category.'' Sabraw continued, ``We are pleased to report that the Dolby Digital transmission has been confirmed using set-top boxes made by Motorola / General Instrument, Scientific-Atlanta, and Pioneer.'' Dolby Digital is backward compatible with the existing Dolby Surround Pro-Logic receivers currently in place. STARZ! will continue to broadcast movies in Dolby Surround while adding the new Dolby Digital. Starz Encore Group is making Dolby Digital available to all digital cable and satellite operators, whose customers will be able to enjoy theatre-like sound using set-top boxes equipped with the Dolby Digital S/PDIF output option. Consumers will know when a movie is being transmitted on the STARZ! East feed in Dolby Digital by the familiar Dolby ``trailers,'' seen in Dolby-equipped movie theatres. Dolby will provide the trailers to Starz Encore for airing before each Dolby Digital transmission on STARZ!. The availability of Dolby Digital for each title will also be noted on the rating and content screen that appears before each film.
