/PRNewswire/ -- Warner Music Group (WMG) announced today that it has agreed to license
ATRAC3, an audio compression technology from Sony Corporation, for use in the electronic
distribution of music. WMG expects to launch its electronic distribution business during
the second half of 2000 using ATRAC3 on a non-exclusive basis. With ATRAC3, WMG will be able to make music available on the Internet that can be downloaded to PCs and then copied on to and played on such portable devices as Sony's Memory Stick Walkman, VAIO Music Clip, Network Walkman and other ATRAC3 compatible devices that are compliant with the guidelines developed by the Secure Digital Music Initiative (SDMI). Sony's ATRAC3 technology, when combined with SDMI-compliant copyright protection technology such as OpenMG and MagicGate Memory Stick, permits securely downloaded music to move from computers to portable devices. Sony has made its OpenMG copyright protection technology interoperable with various music distribution technologies such as Microsoft's Windows Media, IBM's EMMS system and RealNetworks. ``It is our great pleasure that Warner Music Group has chosen ATRAC3 as one of its major audio-compression technologies for electronic music distribution.
