RealNetworks' RealJukebox Becomes First Universal Digital Music System

Industry-Leading RealJukebox Adds Windows Media Audio to Long List of Playback Formats, Extending Reach to Incremental 2% of Media Content

SEATTLE, March 15 /PRNewswire/ -- RealNetworks®, Inc. (Nasdaq: RNWK), the recognized leader in media delivery on the Internet, today announced it is welcoming Microsoft's Windows Media Audio to its comprehensive list of supported audio formats. RealNetworks has previously announced support for eight different audio formats for playback in RealJukebox(TM), the industry-leading jukebox player, including MP3, RealAudio®, AT&T's a2b, IBM's EMMS, Liquid Audio, Mjuice, Sony Music's ATRAC3, and Universal Music Group/InterTrust. Of these formats, six are currently available in RealJukebox.

RealNetworks also announced there are more than 27 million unique registered RealJukebox users worldwide, with more than 100,000 new unique users added daily. This market momentum was substantiated by a January 2000 Media Metrix report citing RealJukebox as the #1 digital jukebox product. Additionally, more than 75 million CDs have been played or recorded by consumers using RealJukebox since its launch in May of 1999, and the use of RealJukebox's Internet CD lookup feature has grown by 11% per month since its release.

RealNetworks recently licensed the Windows Media Audio format, one of several digital formats available, and has the option to support it in its products. The addition of this format will enable RealJukebox to support an additional 2% of audio programming available on the Internet. Once the Windows Media Audio format is available, consumers can use RealJukebox exclusively for one-click access to virtually all of the audio content available on the Internet.

``Supporting the widest range of formats is yet another way RealNetworks is demonstrating to consumers its commitment to providing the best digital music experience,'' said Steve Banfield, general manager, Consumer Division, RealNetworks, Inc. ``No other jukebox product supports such a comprehensive array of content formats. Even if consumers can only access an additional 2% of Internet audio content, we want to provide the most complete solution for meeting their needs.''

``Users have a relationship with their software's complete capabilities, not with any one particular format,'' said Richard Doherty, Director of technology & market research at The Envisioneering Group. ``They want to be able to access any online content regardless of the way it has been encoded. RealNetworks' products already boast the largest consumer popularity, with the ability to play the widest range of content on the Internet. Adding the ability to play Microsoft formats is just one more step toward providing a complete solution ... it removes any reason to consider using alternative players.''
