SigmaTel Announces STAC9744 AC'97 Stereo Codec and Host Audio Drivers At COMDEX '99

The STAC9744 AC'97 Version 2.1 Compliant Codec Sets New Low-Noise Standard For PC Audio Quality - Host Audio Drivers Eliminate PCI Audio Controller From Motherboard Thereby Lowering Costs

COMDEX/FALL '99, LAS VEGAS, Nov. 15 /PRNewswire/ -- SigmaTel, a leading provider of high performance integrated circuits (ICs) for high speed broadband communications, wireless and PC audio solutions, announced today that their new stereo STAC9744 audio codec with hardware sample rate converters has moved into high-volume production for use in standard personal computers and set-top box sound systems. SigmaTel is also announcing the availability of its Microsoft WHQL ``logo'' certified host audio drivers that are used with the STAC9744, or other SigmaTel codecs, to form a complete sound system for the PC.

Host audio drivers allow the typical PCI audio controller to be eliminated from the system saving cost and motherboard space, while consuming only minimal CPU overhead. SigmaTel offers drivers on all key Microsoft operating systems, including Windows®95, Windows®98, Windows®98SE, Windows®2000, and Windows®NT 4. The host audio drivers add complete sound system capability by providing support for DirectSound and wave interfaces. Standard programs, games and emerging DVD applications employ the SigmaTel host audio drivers to provide the same high quality playback and record capability that end users have grown to expect.

SigmaTel has designed the STAC9744 to maintain compatibility with its current line of AC'97 codecs, and with both host audio and motherboard applications in mind. The internal hardware based variable sample rate converters fulfill a key requirement of the PC99 Personal Computer Design Guide. Additionally, the STAC9744 achieves 103dB SNR (Signal to Noise Ratio) which is the lowest noise codec in the industry. This superior low noise performance is especially important in the emerging DVD and game environments where end users have come to expect consumer audio type quality from SigmaTel components.
