Sony Announces Second Super Audio CD Player

New Product to Broaden Music Enthusiasts' Access to the SACD Format

PARK RIDGE, N.J., Aug. 31 /PRNewswire/ -- Looking to expand the high-end audio market and broaden access for music enthusiasts to the new Super Audio CD format, Sony Electronics Inc. today unveiled its second SACD player, the SCD-777ES.

The new player incorporates most of the key technologies and fundamental ``pure audio'' capabilities of Sony's reference standard player, the SCD-1. The SCD-777ES joins the award-winning ES series of audio components and continues Sony's legacy of developing innovative digital audio products.

``With the new SCD-777ES and our SCD-1, Sony's commitment to the future of high-end audio becomes very clear,'' said Mike Fidler, senior vice president of home audio/video products at Sony Electronics. ``Music enthusiasts will now be able to enjoy the quality and flexibility associated with the SACD format, thanks to the exceptional performance offered by the SCD-777ES.''

New Technologies

Like the SCD-1, the SCD-777ES incorporates a number of new technologies, including the following:

    * A newly developed Direct Stream Digital (DSD) decoder LSI that reads the
      invisible watermark on SACD discs-then employs a high-capacity buffer
      memory to rearrange output data as a continuous bitstream;
    * An Accurate Complement Pulse Density Modulation (ACP) system that
      maintains the DSD pulse value consistency and eliminates switching
      distortion;
    * A Synchronous Time Accuracy Controller (S-TACT) that uses discrete
      components to ensure high quality performance without being affected by
      power supply noise and voltage fluctuations;
    * Sony's newest Current Pulse D/A Converter that transforms output voltage
      from the synchronous controller into a series of precision pulses.

CD playback is also enhanced by the player's variable coefficient digital filter (VC24) which performs calculations with unprecedented accuracy. And Sony's Dual Discrete( optical pickup is utilized to optimize each lens of the SCD-777 at different wavelengths for compatibility with both SACD and CD media.

Direct Stream Digital

The SCD-777ES uses Direct Stream Digital (DSD) processing technology to reproduce all the power and nuance of the SACD format. By employing DSD, sounds are recorded at a high sampling rate (2.8224 MHz) as a 1-bit signal. An exceptionally accurate reproduction of the original analog waveform from source materials is the result.

With DSD, music is reproduced without the anomalies and artifacts associated with conventional Pulse Code Modulation (PCM) technology.

Playback Versatility

The SCD-777ES features outstanding two-channel SACD performance along with the ability to play back CD titles.

The player has the ability to read the three disc variations associated with the SACD format: a single high-density layer disc; a disc with dual high-density layers for longer music recording such as symphonies; and a hybrid disc, which combines a high-density and a standard-density (CD) layer.

Hybrid discs can be played in both new SACD players and existing CD hardware.

ES Heritage

From an aesthetic perspective, the new player complements current ES components and features the same black faceplate and overall design characteristics.

The SCD-777ES will be available this October at a manufacturer's suggested retail price of $3,500 and carries a five-year limited parts and labor warranty.
