Introducing SigmaTel C-Major 6-Channel Audio Codec with Universal Jacks and Audio Device Detection

AUSTIN, Texas--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Nov. 18, 2002--SigmaTel Inc. introduces the C-Major STAC9758 AC'97 2.3 (Audio Codec 97 Component Specification Rev. 2.3) audio codec.

This latest general-purpose, 6-channel, 20-bit, 96 kHz, full-duplex codec offers a high signal-to-noise ratio in excess of 90 dB with low distortion. The STAC9758 offers for the first time a Universal Jacks(tm) capability to allow for reconfiguration of the various audio connector functions. The Universal Jacks reconfiguration is the next major step beyond SigmaTel's lead in Jack-Sensing capability, allowing detection of connected audio devices using proprietary on-chip circuitry.

Universal Jacks(tm) allows the codec to detect the type of audio device (microphone, headphone, powered speaker, etc.) that is plugged in to a particular jack, and then configure automatically that jack to match the device. Contrast this to existing audio designs, where each jack has a dedicated function, and only services a particular type of audio device. It is quite easy to become confused when setting up the traditional PC since the same connector type is used for each function, making it very easy to inadvertently connect an audio device to the wrong jack.

Universal Jacks, developed based on Intel audio initiatives and feedback from both Microsoft and tier one PC makers, provides auto-detection and configuration of audio jacks. One of the most frequently reported tech support calls from consumers results from unknowingly plugging a cord into the wrong audio jack. For example, with a system using the STAC9758, a speaker that is accidentally plugged into the microphone jack would trigger the codec to automatically reconfigure, allowing the speaker to work regardless of where it is plugged in. By enabling this functionality there is both a direct cost savings to PC makers because of reduced tech support calls and a benefit to the consumer from an ease-of-use standpoint. PC makers can save an estimated forty cents per system if this class of technical support call can be eliminated using Universal Jacks.

With the prevalence of digital audio and DVD movie playback on the PC, the need for higher quality, 6-channel audio has become increasingly relevant. The STAC9758 also contains new features such as SPDIF_IN and SPDIF_OUT, enabling connections to other consumer electronics throughout the home. In addition to SPDIF output at 48 kHz or 96 kHz sample rates, the STAC9758 supports ADAT® Optical "Lightpipe," a common multi-channel format in the pro-audio industry used for royalty-free transmission of 8 channels of 20-bit or 24-bit, 48 kHz uncompressed digital audio over a single standard Toslink optical cable.

"This latest product is built on an established foundation of quality and technological excellence in the audio codec market," says Alan Hansford, vice president of marketing at SigmaTel. "Having developing solid relationships with software and hardware makers, SigmaTel developed our Universal Jacks products based on direct feedback from those who are on the front line with the consumer."

The STAC9759 is also now available, designed with the same feature set as the STAC9758. Where the STAC9758 is designed for 5-volt analog systems, the STAC9759 is for 3.3-volt analog systems.
