InterVideo Provides DVD and MPEG Playback in Microsoft's New Windows XP Media Center Edition

Watch DVDs And Recorded TV On Windows XP Media Center Edition Using InterVideo Technology

FREMONT, Calif., Sept. 3 /PRNewswire/ -- InterVideo, Inc. today announced that its DVD and MPEG playback technology is powering key capabilities in Microsoft's newest member of the Windows XP family, Windows XP Media Center Edition. Using InterVideo's technology consumers will be able to watch DVDs and recorded TV on Windows XP Media Center Edition computers.

"Microsoft sought to work with the best-in-breed technology providers in creating Windows XP Media Center Edition, and InterVideo is a leading provider of DVD and MPEG playback largely due to the success of WinDVD, the world's most popular DVD software," said Steve Ro, founder and CEO of InterVideo. "InterVideo looks forward to working with Microsoft to provide consumers with new and exciting ways to utilize their PC for entertainment and personal enjoyment."

Windows XP Media Center Edition turns a PC into a media center that integrates digital entertainment experiences -- including live television, personal video recording (PVR), digital music, digital video, DVDs and pictures -- with the freedom of remote control access. A new experience called Media Center will serve as a unified destination for the core entertainment experiences on the media center PC and is designed to be viewed from across the room. Windows XP Media Center Edition is ideal for digital media enthusiasts and consumers in small, space-constrained environments, such as teen-agers, college students, young adults and families who want to use their PC for multimedia entertainment.

InterVideo and Microsoft have worked together on several projects -- including InterVideo's development of DVD playback and MP3 ripping plug-ins for the Windows Media Player in Windows XP, and development of DVD and MPEG playback for Windows XP Media Center Edition is an extension of that ongoing relationship.

"The development work InterVideo has done with us for Windows XP Media Center Edition has been instrumental in bringing new experiences to the PC that we believe will have a lasting impact on the industry and consumers lives," said Mike Toutonghi, vice president of the Windows eHome division of Microsoft. "Their efforts to develop decoders compatible with Media Center Edition's PVR functionality will give consumers great DVD viewing and a smooth pause, fast-forward, and rewind experience for recorded television."

Availability

With development of the software now complete, computer manufacturers working with Microsoft, including Hewlett-Packard Co. (North America) and Samsung Electronics Co. Ltd. (Korea), will have the ability to ship the first wave of new media center PCs in time for the holiday shopping season.
