Cirrus Logic Introduces Latest AC '97 Audio Codec Ideal for Surround Sound Multichannel Applications in Gaming and Entertainment

AUSTIN, Texas--(BUSINESS WIRE)--May 31, 2002--Cirrus Logic Inc. (Nasdaq:CRUS) continued to enhance its Total-E(tm) product offerings for the PC and home entertainment markets today by introducing its CS4202, an AC '97 2.2 compliant stereo audio codec architected for multichannel PC surround audio systems.

The CS4202 will be demonstrated at the Computex Show in Taipei, Taiwan, from June 3-7, 2002.

The CS4202 is a multi-purpose stereo codec that extends AC '97 performance to include surround sound, multichannel applications for the PC. The audio codec is based on Cirrus' industry-leading delta-sigma and mixed-signal technology and supports a high-performance motherboard down solution.

The IC includes DVD playback support with easy scalability to 5.1 channels and an integrated headphone amplifier to provide high realism surround audio for PC-based entertainment. The CS4202 audio codec can be easily enhanced to 5.1 channels by adding 2 Cirrus CS4334 digital-to-analog converters and thus providing a more competitive total system cost-effective solution.

"The home theater surround experience is becoming the norm for PC-based entertainment," said Lew Paceley, vice president of marketing for the Crystal Products Division of Cirrus Logic Inc. "Our CS4202 not only provides an excellent stereo experience but brings the stunning multichannel realism of the home theater experience to the PC."

Cirrus Logic continues to provide significant system cost savings with its CS4202 by integrating silicon components such as the high-performance headphone amplifier, a programmable microphone pre-amplifier and an on-chip PLL for use with external clock circuitry that reduces board space and external components.

The CS4202 can also be combined with a PCI audio accelerator or core logic supporting the AC '97 interface. Some other key features for the CS4202 include an automatic jack sense through GPIO, S/PDIF digital Audio Output, I2S serial digital outputs that enable 5.1 channel applications and extensive power management support.

The CS4202's advanced feature set helps enable the design of PC 99 and PC 2001 compliant high-quality audio systems for desktop, portable and entertainment PCs. The CS4202 exceeds Microsoft PC2001 audio performance requirements. The CS4202 also includes drivers that have been WHQL certified for all current operating systems from Microsoft, i.e., Windows NT 4.0, Windows 98 Second Edition, Windows Millennium, Windows 2000 and Windows XP.

Pricing and Availability

The CS4202 is currently available in a 48-pin TQFP package and priced at $1.44 in 100,000 quantities. The CS4334 is currently available and priced at $0.70 in 100,000 quantities.
