SigmaTel Takes a Step Beyond Current PC Audio Quality Standards At IDF

SAN FRANCISCO--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- Feb. 25, 2002--SigmaTel Inc., the leading provider of AC'97 audio codecs, moves the market toward the next generation of audio quality with a DVD-Audio demonstration of the SigmaTel® C-Major(tm) STAC9460 consumer audio codec.

The demonstration is engineered to illustrate the demanding 24-bit, 192 kHz, 6-channel environment required by DVD-Audio or SACD (Super Audio Compact Disk) standards. This type of codec implementation illustrates how PC audio quality is evolving based on current consumer audio technology.

The personal computer has become the home base for the digital living room. From gamers to MP3 lovers to movie buffs, the PC offers unparalleled digital rendering of high-end visual and audio experiences. With the digital living room also containing many consumer electronics, it becomes important for quality standards to be set throughout the space, including the PC. The SigmaTel C-Major demonstration shows the potential for full audio quality on a PC and that SigmaTel is in a position to bring this quality to life.

With the explosion of DVD into the movie distribution business, the 6-channels of audio that DVD brings will eventually become the de facto standard for PC audio entertainment. DVD-Audio and SACD quality is superior to CD audio due to higher sample rates, more resolution, and six full channels of output.

``With new standards such as DVD-Audio and SACD setting a precedent for the home entertainment experience, we can look forward to the moment when consumers enjoy the same benefits on their PCs,'' says Alan Hansford, vice president of marketing at SigmaTel.

SigmaTel's demonstration at the Spring Intel Developer Forum 2002 brings to light the potential of the C-Major audio codec product line. The STAC9460 is a six-channel, 24-bit, full duplex audio codec for use in consumer applications. This codec incorporates SigmaTel's proprietary Sigma-Delta technology to achieve signal-to-noise ratios in excess of 105 decibels.
