| PARK RIDGE, N.J., Feb. 20
/PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Whether you burn, rip, download or mix, Sony provides three
versatile media options for taking your digital music with you. With CDs, MiniDisc and
Memory Stick® media, along with a wide choice of portable devices, there is a size, shape
and style to suit every need. Sony's Internet audio products feature MP3 playback on a new selection of CD Walkman® players, a boombox and mini system. A line of Net MD(TM) Walkman recorders and a new Network Walkman(TM) player with MagicGate(TM) Memory Stick media lets consumers transfer their digital music files from a PC. ``For Gen Y consumers, the PC plays a vital role in the creation of personalized music mixes,'' said Robert Ashcroft, senior vice president of marketing for Sony Electronics' Personal Mobile Products Division. ``With Internet audio solutions such as Net MD Walkman recorders and CD Walkman players with MP3 playback, Sony is able to provide these enthusiastic consumers with innovative products to take their music on the go.'' CD Walkman Stereo With CD-R/RW and MP3 Playback Two newly designed CD Walkman players can playback personally created CD-R/RW discs, including those encoded with MP3 files. The D-CJ500 and D-CJ506CK models have a dot matrix display and an easy-access folder function that quickly navigates between multiple MP3 folders. The units support ID3 tagging and CD text, and support playback of MP3 files recorded at any rate from 8 to 320 kbps. Using just two ``AA'' type batteries, both models achieve up to 24 hours of continuous MP3 playback. Enabling listeners to take full advantage of the long battery life and enjoy their music without interruption, the players also feature ultimate ``skip-free'' G-Protection(TM) technology*. Icy-blue in color, the new D-CJ500 CD Walkman player will be available in March for about $100. Supplied car kit accessories and a red backlit, two-line, nine-character dot matrix display up the cool-factor of the new D-CJ506CK CD Walkman stereo. This model will be available in April for about $120. CD/Radio Cassette Recorder The new CFD-S20CP CD/radio cassette recorder is a feature-packed boombox that adds advanced functionality with CD-R/RW and MP3 playback capabilities. For example, the unit is multi-session disc playable, so it will play back discs that were recorded in more than one sitting. And, the resume function will find the exact spot on the track that was playing if the device gets shut off mid-song. The boombox also features a 14-segment LCD display that makes it easy to read up to 64 characters of alphabetic labeling on recorded discs. The new compact CFD-S20CP boombox also has a digital AM/FM stereo tuner that allows up to 30 stations to be programmed in its preset memory. A pre-set equalizer function adjusts to optimize sound based on the genre of music being played. The new boombox also comes with a remote control. It will be available in April for about $100. Mini Hi Fi System The new MHC-GS200 and MHC-GS300 AV mini systems feature MP3 playback capability from CD-R/RW discs. Consumers can listen to their compressed MP3 songs on the system. The MHC-GS300 AV model adds Dolby(TM) Digital Pro Logic(TM) surround sound and five speakers. Additionally, the component systems include a Game Sync(TM) feature that allows players to integrate their own favorite music into video games, and boasts 120 total watts of power, Digital Output, a Full Logic Auto Reverse cassette deck, and Keyboard Input for single-disc memo titling. Both systems will be available in May for about $300 and $350 respectively. Net MD Walkman Recorders The new line of Net MD Walkman recorders provide a unique way for consumers to record their favorite music and create customized mixes. All four models connect directly to a PC via USB and provide up to 32x speed for transferring digital music files. The Net MD(TM) simple burner QuickRip(TM) CD dubbing application facilitates the fast transfer of CDs to MD without storing files on a hard drive. Users simply launch the application and select the tracks they want to transfer to the recorder. Three recording modes offer the choice to record in standard mode for the richest sound quality or two different long play modes for the most effective use of space on a single MiniDisc. The bundled OpenMG(TM) jukebox management software supports secure music downloads and is used to organize playlists, title tracks and maximize music mixes. Net MD players can record from various sources, support multiple Internet audio formats like MP3 and Windows Media? audio files, and features flexible editing tools. At about $2 a disc, MiniDisc media is affordable, durable and re-recordable up to a million times without degradation. Net MD Walkman players will be available in April. Model numbers and expected selling prices are as follows:
Network Walkman Player With Memory Stick Media The new NW-MS11 Network Walkman player features a 128 MB MagicGate Memory Stick media card that lets users record up to 240 minutes of digital music**. The player comes bundled with OpenMG(TM) Jukebox music management software and supports ATRAC3(TM), MP3, Windows Media(TM) audio and WAV files. With this new player, consumers can create their own digital music collections by downloading songs from the Internet and by ripping tracks from their CDs to their hard drive. Music is then transferred at high speed to the player via USB. And because there are no moving parts, the Network Walkman personal stereo is skip-proof. Perfect for commuting or travel, the new Network Walkman player has a rechargeable, removable ``gum stick'' style nickel metal hydride (NiMH) battery that offers up to 10 hours of continuous playback. Additionally, the NW-MS11 Network Walkman player comes with a USB
cable, headphones, battery charger and belt clip. It will be available in April for about
$300. * Reduces or eliminates skipping during most active uses.
** Storage capacity may vary and a portion of the memory is used for data
management functions.
