First Dolby Headphone Product for US Launches at 2002 Consumer Electronics Show

Denon AVR-5803 Home Receiver Debuts at CES

LAS VEGAS--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Jan. 8, 2002--Dolby Laboratories announced that its licensee Denon has launched the first US consumer electronics product equipped with Dolby® Headphone technology: the AVR-5803 receiver for home entertainment systems.

Consumers can plug any conventional headphone set into the AVR-5803 and enjoy the benefits of Dolby Headphone from any source, such as CDs, tapes, records, DVDs, television broadcasts and even soundtracks encoded in Dolby Digital Surround EX. The Dolby Headphone feature is also available in the newly released upgrade for existing Denon AVR-5800 receivers.

Dolby Headphone technology turns any conventional pair of headphones into a personal home theater system. Instead of the sound seeming to come from inside the listener's head, as it does with conventional headphone audio, Dolby Headphone sound is experienced as if originating from a real home theater speaker system in a real room. In this way, Dolby Headphone replicates the cinematic experience and more closely transmits the original content maker's intention with precise sound directionality, while significantly reducing the listening fatigue associated with standard headphones.

Surround sound (multichannel sound) adds depth and realism to any audio experience -- music, movies, television, games -- by enveloping the listener in the sound. The current standard for surround sound is 5.1-channel: right, center, and left speakers in front of the listener; right and left speakers behind; plus a subwoofer output (the ``.1'') to provide the low-frequency sounds. Sounds themselves are more natural and the listener becomes a more integral part of the experience with surround sound, adding to the excitement of music and movies.

Already, Dolby Headphone technology is available in more than 1 million computer systems, enabling people to watch DVDs or listen to music in surround sound over conventional headphones plugged into their desktop or laptop computers.

In addition, Dolby Headphone has been adopted by a number of international airlines as the headphone technology for in-flight movies. These airlines include Singapore, Cathay Pacific, Lufthansa, and Qantas. Passengers on planes equipped with Dolby Headphone technology can enjoy in-flight movies with surround sound through headphones.

In another first for Dolby Headphone technology, the DVD for the movie Pearl Harbor was recently released with a pre-encoded Dolby Headphone track, meaning that people can hear the movie soundtrack in surround sound over conventional headphones, regardless of whether Dolby Headphone is incorporated into the DVD player on which the movie is played.
