Addonics Announces Portable 8x DVD/24x CD-ROM Combo Drive

Lightweight, 14 oz. Transportable Drive Includes MPEG2 Decoding Software, 32 Bit CardBus/PCMCIA -- PC Card -- Interface Cable

FREMONT, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Sept. 27, 2000--Addonics Technologies today announced the Pocket DVD8x24 -- a combination 8x DVD and 24x CD-ROM drive with PC Card and CardBus interfaces. The new portable drive provides DVD/MPEG II as well as CD/CD-RW audio and video playback on all PCMCIA or CardBus equipped mobile computers and desktop PCs.

The newest addition to the Addonics ``Pocket'' series of mobile peripheral products turns a notebook PC into a portable DVD/CD-ROM player to deliver high quality audio and video with low CPU utilization. Users can play full-screen DVD movies with the drive's MPEG2 decoding software. The drive can be used by any notebook PC. The drive can be powered from the notebook computer (through the keyboard port) or by an external A/C power adapter.

The Pocket DVD8x24 drive plays both CD-ROM and DVD media, and features a front-panel loading tray that requires no caddies or cartridges. The PocketDVD has a list price of $359. The drive fits neatly inside any briefcase. It measures 6.4 x 5.4 x 0.9 inches, and weighs just 14 ounces. Windows 95/98/2000 MPEG II decoding software is included as well as software drivers for Windows 95, Windows 98 and Windows 2000.

The drive is compatible with eight different multimedia formats, including: DVD, CD-ROM, CD-ROM XA, CD-I, CD-DA, CD-Bridge, CD-Extra, and Video CD. It will read all CD-R and CD-RW recorded media and is Photo CD multi-session compliant.

System requirements are Pentium II 300MHz or greater CPU, PC Card Type I/II slot or CardBus interface, and a minimum 64 MB RAM. The drive will be available through major catalog companies, resellers, VARs and distributors, including PC Connection, CDW, Buy.com, Insight, Egghead, Ingram Micro, and D&H.
