Dell to Preview Digital Audio Receiver During PC Expo

New Device Extends the Power of the PC and Usability of PC Jukeboxes

ROUND ROCK, Texas--(BUSINESS WIRE)--June 21, 2000--Dell (Nasdaq:DELL) a world leader in Internet commerce and infrastructure, today announced a technology preview of the Dell Digital Audio Receiver.

The new appliance will enable listeners to enjoy CD-quality music stored on a PC in any room of the home by distributing audio to remote receivers or home stereo systems. Dell will demonstrate the Digital Audio Receiver for the first time during PC Expo in New York, June 26-28.

The Dell Digital Audio Receiver further extends Dell's commitment of providing customers beyond-the-box-offerings and illustrates that the PC is at the center of all computing and Internet experience.

PC jukeboxes and the Internet have revolutionized the way people buy and play music.

``Customers have made a significant investment in their PCs, music libraries and home stereo systems,'' said Stephan Godevais, vice president of Dell's consumer products. ``The Dell Digital Audio Receiver is designed to make it easy for all of these things to work together so our customers can enjoy their favorite digital music in any room of the home on remote receivers or on their stereo system,'' said Godevais.

Previously, customers could not easily enjoy their favorite PC music with traditional stereo systems, especially if the stereo and the PC were located in different rooms. The Dell Digital Audio Receiver, which supports MP3 and Microsoft Windows Media Audio files, addresses this need by distributing digital music stored on the hard drive to other rooms with existing phone lines.

Dell Digital Audio Receiver Features

Powered by S3 Rio Audio technology and initially exclusively available through Dell, the Dell Digital Audio Receiver offers customers the ability to search, sort and play their entire PC music collection by artist, title, album, playlist or genre. Other features and benefits include:

  • Easy Setup - Available factory configured with a Dimension PC or as a customer kit for existing desktop PCs, the receiver connects to existing home phone lines, speakers and stereo equipment without the need for extra wiring.
  • Music Management Software - MusicMatch Jukebox Version 5.1 and all the appropriate drivers are factory installed on Dimension systems purchased with a Digital Audio Receiver.
  • Built-in Amplifier - With an integrated amplifier, the receiver is strong enough to power passive speakers without the need for additional stereo equipment.
  • Customizable Display - Song, album, artist and time information is displayed on a backlit LCD screen, which can be customized to fit the listener's preference.
  • Streaming CD-quality Music - Using a 10-megabit/second phone line connection to the PC enables quick access between the receiver and music files located on the PC hard drive.
  • Remote Control - Enables convenient and full control of the receiver from across the room.
  • Standards-based Connectivity - Supports HPNA 2.0 or Ethernet networks.

Pricing and Availability

Beginning in August, the Dell Digital Audio Receiver, will be available direct from Dell for $199 for customers purchasing a receiver with a Dimension system configured with a home phone line-networking card. Customers will be able to purchase the receiver for an existing desktop system for $249.
