Multi-channel Broadcast Demonstration Points to Future of Internet Music And Film Capabilities |
| NEW YORK, June 13
/PRNewswire/ -- Continuing to offer consumers the finest in audio enhancement technologies
and building on the innovation and overwhelming success of WOW(TM), SRSWOWcast.com, Inc.,
the Internet entertainment subsidiary of SRS Labs, Inc. (Nasdaq: SRSL), is providing a
technology preview and demonstration of its next generation streaming surround sound
technology capability in booths 112 and 114 at Streaming Media East. These technologies
allow for the broadcast of multi-channel surround-sound music and video over the Internet,
with playback over any PC or device playing Internet content. The surround sound format
works for listeners who have complete multi-channel speakers set up in their listening
environment, as well as in those systems where just two standard speakers are used. Home
users can enjoy the Company's flagship Internet stereo enhancement technology, WOW(TM), by
downloading the beta version of Microsoft Windows® Media Player(TM) 7, which includes
WOW(TM) as its key audio enhancement feature. SRSWOWcast.com, upon its launch next month, will be the first destination site to combine advanced sound technologies with a diverse library of music and original video content. At Streaming Media East, SRSWOWcast.com is decoding a live stream featuring a video clip encoded with its patented Circle Surround® technology and playing it back over a computer with multiple speakers. To address the burgeoning music and film content availability on the Internet, Circle Surround 5.1 (CS 5.1) technology has been adapted for use as a multi-channel Internet audio delivery technology. CS 5.1 enables the encoding of 5.1 channels on just two channels of audio. These two channels can then be efficiently transmitted over the Internet using any of the popular compression schemes, and received by the listener where a CS 5.1 decoder creates full multi-channel audio from the two-channel stream. The Circle Surround software decoder can likewise produce 4, 5 or 5.1 channels of audio from non-encoded material recorded in stereo or even mono. ``Our first Internet audio technology was officially kicked off in software last month with the availability of the beta version of the new Microsoft Windows Media Player 7, which includes our WOW(TM) stereo enhancement,'' states Chuck Cortright, president of SRSWOWcast.com. ``We are very pleased with the overwhelming reception that WOW has received but we have not stopped there. As broadband connectivity increases and video and music entertainment content become increasingly available over the Internet, we recognize that listeners will crave a level of audio quality that is closer to what they have enjoyed in their home theater system.'' Cortright continues, ``Our next generation surround technologies bring that high quality, exciting experience to Internet users today whether they have two speakers or multiple speakers. We are excited to preview our technologies here in New York City and look forward to introducing them to the web audience after the launch of our site next month.'' Where multiple speakers are not available, SRS Labs' virtualization technology, TruSurround®, has been integrated with the multi-channel output from the Circle Surround software decoder. This unprecedented combination allows surround sound playback even from mono sources on a two-speaker system with complete surround sound effects. TruSurround has become a standard for multi-channel virtual surround playback on DVD players, televisions and consumer set-top box systems, and SRS Labs has developed the bridge to bring this standard to the Internet.
