FAQ: Nascar 3 Sound Configuration

For A3D console variables for other A3D2 games go to our A3D console variable page.

WARNING!
Changing these settings could seriously affect your listening experience of these games. Only experienced users should change these values; please refer to the defaults listed for each variable to return the game to its original settings.

nascar3small.jpg (6635 bytes)These commands are on top of the already dialed out sound configuration from within the options screen.  Here is what you can adjust from the options screen:

  • master volume setting;
  • volume levels for the player's engine, opponent's engine, skids, crashes, other effects and spotter / crew chief;
  • sound quality (switch between 8 and 16 bit audio);
  • number of opponents heard (between 0 and 7);
  • setting for no reflections, reflections off opponents cars, reflections off the track walls as well as an option to enable all reflections.

If this is not enough to keep you happy (and it was not for me) then you can go to the advanced configuration route on top of the settings above.

nascar3dir.jpg (6973 bytes)To do that you will go to the directory that you installed the game (default is Papyrus) and then going into the Nascar3 directory and then either into sound or sound16 depending on which sound option you selected about.

In both of those directories is a text file called Sndtweak.

Sndtweak

The following is found in Sndtweak.  Open and edit with a text editor such as notepad.  The contents of soundtwk follow:

# File for tweaking sound constants in NASCAR 3.
# This file may reside in either the SOUND or the SOUND16 directory.
# If it resides in the SOUND directory it affects 8-bit sound.
# If it resides in the SOUND16 directory it affects 16-bit sound.
# This file may be deleted from either the SOUND or SOUND16 directories,
# in which case the default values will be used.
#
# 1st arg: -sample volume- Must be between > 0.0 and <= 1.0
# 2nd arg: -baseline pitch- Must be > 0
# 3rd arg: -reflection volume- Must be > 0.0 (or 0.0 if N/A)
# 4th arg: -reflection delay scale- Must be > 0.0 (or -1.0 if N/A)
#
# The baseline pitch is specified in terms of engine RPMs.
# Making this number bigger lowers the pitch.
#
# NOTE: Change this file at your own risk. Improper formatting may
# cause a NASCAR 3 program failure.
#
# Examples:
#
# 16-bit Sound default:
# vol pitch refl vol refl delay
# 0.60 7250 1.00f 1.00 # player engine low
# 0.70 7250 1.00f 1.00 # player engine high
# 1.00 8500 1.00f 1.00 # skidding
# 1.00 9750 -1.00f -1.00 # skid spin
# 1.00 6500 -1.00f -1.00 # skid slide
# 1.00 8000 -1.00f -1.00 # opponent engine
# 1.00 -1 -1.00f -1.00 # crashes
# 0.80 -1 -1.00f -1.00 # pit sounds / gear shift
# 1.00 -1 -1.00f -1.00 # spotter / crew chief
#
# Change these:
# vol pitch refl vol refl delay
0.60 7250 4.00f 4.00 # player engine low
0.70 7250 4.00f 4.00 # player engine high
1.00 8500 4.00f 4.00 # skidding
1.00 9750 -1.00f -1.00 # skid spin
1.00 6500 -1.00f -1.00 # skid slide
1.00 8000 -1.00f -1.00 # opponent engine
1.00 -1 -1.00f -1.00 # crashes
0.80 -1 -1.00f -1.00 # pit sounds / gear shift
1.00 -1 -1.00f -1.00 # spotter / crew chief

When you open Sndtweak you will find that reflections are on but are set to the default levels noted in the file.

I have changed the reflection volume to 4.00 and the reflection delay to 4.00 for both engine settings and skidding (as noted above).  I am still tweaking away but for me thats a big improvement over the default settings of 1.00. You don't want to set it too high as that will cause the reflections to be stronger than the direct path which sounds pretty bad but if you are running a Vortex 2 card with Nascar 3 you might want to play around with those settings to further enhance what are some pretty nice sound effects.

I will be checking with Aureal and Papyrus to get their read on what the optimum setting for Vortex 2 owners might be.  Any questions are best directed to our forum but you may also chose to mail us.
