Introduction
With the arrival of DVD the interest in Dolby Digital 5.1 and later
DTS has increased significantly. In this series of articles we will cover a variety of
topics including whats required to take full advantage of the multi-channel
soundtracks when using headphones, 2, 4, 5.1 and 6.1 speaker systems with the clear focus
being on using the PC as your entertainment center. We will also be going through the more
well known virtual surround sound technologies available.
In this article we will in some detail cover what you need to take full advantage of
the surround sound formats available for DVD movies as well as DVD audio discs. We will
not cover the image aspects of the DVDs.
The other articles in the DVD series are Surround Sound Formats,
Virtual Surround Sound
Technologies, Stereo to 4 or
5.1 Expansion and The
Advantages of the Center and LFE channels
To be able to play DVD movies you need a DVD player, speaker system
or headphone and, while its not the focus of this article, there is a clear
advantage if you have something to display the image on (e.g. TV, monitor). If you intend
to use your PC you will in addition to the basic DVD drive use a software DVD player and
soundcard or a separate DVD/MPEG2 decoder. What follows is an overview of what you should
have in mind when selecting the various components when it comes to audio.
