Article Index:

Introduction

With the arrival of DVD the interest in Dolby Digital 5.1 and later DTS has increased significantly. In this series of articles we will cover a variety of topics including what’s required to take full advantage of the multi-channel soundtracks when using headphones, 2, 4, 5.1 and 6.1 speaker systems with the clear focus being on using the PC as your entertainment center.

In this article we cover the benefit of a real and surround center channel. We also cover the advantage of the LFE channel, both as separate and down-mixed.

The other articles in the DVD series are DVD Buyer's Guide, Surround Sound Formats, Virtual Surround Sound Technologies and Stereo to 4 or 5.1 Expansion. We will not cover the image aspects of the DVDs.

So on to the advantage of a center channel
